Offensive BFM 1 - Basic principles

This series will cover the essentials of Defensive BFM that you need to survive a dogfight in DCS World. I'm not a fighter pilot. While these videos are based on real tactics, they are for context only and are only relevant in a game environment. This is based on my own understanding and is not professionally authoritative. Accordingly, the tenets in this video are the ones I apply, and not some official law that fighter pilots live by. Hopefully these videos will help you improve your own technique, and develop your understanding of the reality of air combat. Chapters 0:00 Intro and caveats 0:45 Aims of the video 1:05 The nature of combat 2:35 Aim of this series 4:12 Vertical 3/9 Line 5:17 Line of Sight Rate 5:46 Turning Room 6:15 Tenets of DBFM 7:58 Conclusion By the end of this video you will be able to: - Understand the definitions that underpin offensive BFM techniques. - Understand the tenets of Offensive BFM. - Have the necessary foundation knowledge to understand future videos in this series. This is the first video in a series that explains my understanding of Offensive BFM. If you haven't already, you will likely benefit from watching the previous series on BFM Fundamentals, where the techniques referenced here are explained in more depth. Being able to conduct effective Offensive BFM is critical to success in Within Visual Range engagements as it is the mechanism by which you turn an offensive advantage into a kill. In this video, I'll explain the nomenclature used in the following series, and the tenets of Offensive BFM manoeuvring. Obeying these 'rules' will not ensure your success, or even your survival; but they will improve your odds. Nomenclature explained includes: - Vertical 3/9 Line. - Line of Sight Rate. - Turning Room. As always, I hope you enjoy it. Please like a subscribe if you feel I have helped you better understand the topic, and I'll see you again soon.

The link referenced in this mission is at https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3309574/ When dealing with offensive BFM it makes sense to begin with the correct action to take to maintain the most offensive position you can find yourself in - directly behind the bandit. You can expect them to do their best to defend themselves, and even a simple break turn can be surprisingly effective against someone without a good understanding of the basic geometry and some fundamental principles. This video presents some of those principles. Chapters 0:00 Intro and caveats 1:53 Aims of the video 2:36 The Attack Window 3:07 Geometry 5:20 Entry Mechanics 7:17 Assessing Entry 8:43 Entry Correction 10:44 How to practice 11:10 Conclusion By the end of this video you will: - Know the cues that indicate that you are entering the bandit’s bubble. - Know how to assess your Attack Window Entry and the appropriate follow-on. - Know how to judge when Misaligned Turn Circles will develop to your advantage. Hopefully this video will help you improve your own technique, and develop your understanding of the reality of air combat.
